Southend carnival – August 2009…
Our very first carnival… and it was a great success. We had so much fun, everyone worked so hard and everyone loved it.

All prepared in our crisp whites and our freshly painted faces… (A new talent I have aquired:)) Mestre Biscuim gathered us all together to warm up. Without a doubt we were making a statement, and with our two beautiful sambistas we were perhaps pulling more attention our way than some of the other groups, and to add the final cherry to the cake our “full of energy hero” Christos was our very own Carmen Miranda, topped with his very own fruit salad.
We were placed right at the front….. AT THE FRONT!!! and it sure was the best place to be… with the thousands of people that lined the sea front in Southend we were one of the first things they heard and then seen. They danced in the streets on this night.

my first festival… “Barefoot”
With a last minute check of the internet, it confirmed what I was hoping for… a weekend of sunshine. Exactlly what was needed for a weekend of camping at the Barefoot festival. Not only was it my very first festival, I know I have left it a little late, but I was also going to catching up with friends, playing music and mostly importantly relaxing in the sunshine!
Following the pink feet through town and into the event field I had no idea what to expect, but was fantastically greated with a great roar from Christos, and from that moment it was going to be a great time. After a few attempts of setting up the tent, do the black pole go in the middle or the outside…, we finally got it all sorted, with an inflatable double mattress, glorious, some lasagne passed to us from the ever caring Reema. We were set for the festival experience.
I did manage to forget one thing, shoes…. I spent the whole weekend walking on uneven ground trying not to slip out of my flip flops… but as it was so warm, I don’t think I could have had it any otherway.

Ag’ya Danmye Ladja – I want to know more
So having an interest in Capoeira its natural when you come across similar things in other cultures you would like to know more. Surfing the great wave of YouTube I, as well as thousands of others, came across a video of “Ag’ya Danmye Ladja” a fascinating, dance, fight, expressive artform – and I would like to try to find out some more about it.
What I know so far, taken from other references on the internet:
This above video shows an art form today known as the Ladja or Danmye (previously entitled the Ag’Ya) of Martinique. Two combatants engage each other in a game of trickery, skill and acrobatic agility. At the head of the circle musicians control the tempo of the contest singing, playing drums and other instrument of African origin. Could this far-away Caribbean lookalike be a long-lost capoeira cousin? Does this offer us clues as to Capoeira’s African origins? The similarity is nothing but striking!
Sem capoeira eu não posso viver – musica
A beautiful song, sung and written by Mestrando Charm. You can hear the song here on You Tube.
Sem capoeira eu não posso viver
sou peixe fora do mar
passarinho sem voar
dia sem escurecer
Coro: Sem capoeira eu não posso viver
sou peixe fora do mar
passarinho sem voar
dia sem escurecer
Mas mesmo rastejando vou
agacho para jogar
peço ao berimbau que toca
e a Deus pra me olhar
